GHPS Kakolu School | Learning 21st century skills

GHPS KAKOLU was established in 1950 and it is managed by the Department of Education. 

The QShala Program, sponsored by the Educait Trust was conducted at Kakolu Government School for the students in grades 8 and 9. Five sessions were conducted over the course of two weeks for 38 children, in the month of December 2019.    

Our Outreach program focuses on tapping the curiosity in underprivileged children from government schools and low-income private schools. It aims at providing exposure to the students to world scenarios and to make the content they read in their textbooks more relatable. 

Objectives: Over the course of the workshop, QShala covered the following objectives:  

  • To instill and inculcate a passion for curiosity (through quizzing) and learning thereby 
  • Pointers at acquiring key personality traits – speaking, listening, reading, and presentation skills  
  • Encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship  
  • Mentoring and feedback 

Methodology 

  • Introduce topics through questions framed in interesting formats 
  • A wide variety of topics covered such as history, geography, liberal arts, sciences, music, literature, travel, food, technology, business, sports, politics, etc.  
  • Stories, trivia, and interesting anecdotes on various occurrences, personalities, events, structures, and places, included to pique participants’ inquisitiveness about the world through engaging audio-visual content 
  • These stories would be used to build context, around their conventional studies so that they are given a greater reason to understand it 
  • Guidance for speaking, listening, presenting, and reading skills provided to students through videos and engaging activities conducted to encourage good practices  
  • Feedback and mentoring provided to each individual student according to individual performances in activities. 

The Route Taken:  

QShala curated course directions especially for this cohort to offer them knowledge in engaging formats and new-age skill development that helps manoeuvre life towards success.  

  1. Inculcate a habit of writing by maintaining a daily diary, Preliminary assessments, Activity on Notetaking, and questions on various topics discussed. 
  2. Communication/Speaking Skills, Book Cover Activity to explore creativity and storytelling ability, questions from various topics discussed. 
  3. Be your own QuizMaster – General Awareness, questions on States and Union Territories of India 
  4. Decision Making skills, Activity on Financial management, Questions based on listening discussed, feedback and testimonials. 
  5. Active/Speed Reading Tips discussed/Different Parts of the Newspaper discussed, questions, Newspaper based treasure hunt activity, post assessments.

Impact:  

The objective of QShala is to foster curiosity and nothing is as fulfilling as a session well received. A cohort excited only reinforces our purpose. Over a session of only two weeks, the impact was tangible!
